About Claire Lassonnery

An elevated viewpoint that simplifies reality. Light as a central subject. Surfaces built in fine layers, then worked and burnished, where light catches, circulates, and structures space through reflection. A quiet abstraction that invites the eye to slow down. Publicly presented and sold since 2024. Shown at Artitude Galeria in Singapore and on Singulart.

BIOGRAPHY

Claire Lassonnery is a French contemporary artist based in Malaysia and working internationally. Her gaze is defined by a heightened perspective and a sustained attention to light. It translates into surfaces built in fine layers, then worked and burnished, where light catches and circulates, and where reflections structure space. Her works are dense fields of color, shaped by contrasts of material and rhythm, between density and breathing space, matte and reflection, tension and calm, where color holds light and becomes presence.

A Doctor of Pharmacy, she carries scientific precision and experimental rigor into an exploration of matter and surface transformation. Trained in traditional lacquer techniques in Vietnam, she turns this ancestral know-how into a contemporary language. Her painting is built layer after layer, with patience and finesse, until it reaches a balance between optical depth and the simplicity of the gesture. Her series form cycles of research linking nature, movement, and interiority.

After several years of research and practice, her work has been publicly presented and sold since 2024. Her works are shown at Artitude Galeria in Singapore and on Singulart. They are held in private collections across Asia and Europe, and have been exhibited in Malaysia, Singapore, and Monaco. Critical texts and publications also accompany her work.

ARTISTIC STATEMENT

What if, beyond appearances, light revealed what the eye can’t see?

I come from pharmacy. Watching what escapes the naked eye. Waiting. Starting again. And one day, I needed that precision to become a gesture. Something direct. Something the hand can feel. Bringing light out of matter. I wanted a material that resists and responds. Lacquer became my language, layer after layer, then worked and burnished until the light comes into focus. In the studio, I watch matter react, slowly, over time, with controlled contrasts between matte and reflection, until the surface lights up, just as it should. I simply allowed myself to stain my lab coat differently.

A gaze that rises. Forms simplify. Color becomes structure. A slowing down, first. Feeling before understanding. A quiet, inhabited abstraction. My surfaces send light back, then hold it, and the eye moves back and forth. Like when you rub a bathroom mirror. At first, nothing. And then, suddenly, the reflection appears. And, in the end, light has the last word.
